Quick Tips on How to Clean Your Office Walls

How to Clean office walls

Office floors and carpets are always given attention in the everyday maintenance check of your office cleaning personnel. Your walls, however, have missed a lot of cleaning days and are only noticed when spring cleaning comes. Or worse, when the dirt has made the paint on the walls appear like it’s a dull color. And it’s not a nice look.

Your office walls are often overlooked or are not given the proper cleaning treatment they deserve, but these walls must be included in the critical must-check items in your office maintenance checklist. Here is why.

Why you should clean your office walls

Uncleaned walls are home to dirt, dust, and cobwebs. Worse, these walls are also associated with the threat of mold development, which is an even bigger problem to have to deal with.

When the walls are left uncleaned, it could make you and the other office tenants feel sick. This is what is known as sick building syndrome. In fact, sick building syndrome is a real thing and your walls failing to get the proper cleaning treatment needed can contribute largely to this phenomenon. When this happens, the productivity and well-being of the people inside the office get compromised. In the long run, it can affect the whole company’s operations.

How often you should clean your walls

Now that you know the ugly truth about your wall’s current state, you may be asking the obvious question: how often should you clean your walls?

Cleaning office walls

Most companies only deal with the burden of cleaning their walls during end of tenancy cleaning. This is a bad practice and risks damage to the property. Furthermore, it creates an unhealthy space for everyone who is staying in the room for long periods.

As a general rule, walls should be cleaned every 2 weeks, particularly glass walls. Compared to regular walls, these walls need more frequent cleaning and must be maintained well to create a good impression for both visitors and employees.

How to clean your office walls easily

Cleaning your office walls may not be the easiest thing to do, considering the surface area and the reach. Most companies opt for the services of a professional cleaning services company, as they are trained to handle the job with ease. However, if you are on a budget, there are some tips on how to clean walls the easy way and so you don’t have to go through so much trouble.

Gather your tools.

You will only need a couple of items that are already present in your storage or cleaning supplies room. This will include:

  • Soft towels or lint-free cloth or microfiber cloths
  • Broom
  • A pail of warm soapy water
  • A pail of clean water
  • Dust cloth
  • Brush
  • Sponge
  • Drop cloth for dripping and spills

Remove all the items on your office walls

Keep all clocks, frames, and hanging items on your wall away and put it in the center of the room. This is so that you can work freely and manage to keep the dirt away from these items which will be placed back into the walls once you are done.

Get rid of dust.

Using a broom and a towel, remove the dust and cobwebs that have accumulated on your walls. Make sure to reach the ceiling and the baseboards.

Use a drop cloth for spills.

Before you try to clean your walls with water, lay a drop cloth to absorb the drips as well as to protect your office floors from water damage.

Scrub your walls.

In washing interior walls, use a soft cloth or sponge dipped in warm soapy water and work your walls from top to bottom. Try not to get your sponge too wet as this could cause potential damage on your walls. Keep it damp only. Rinse the walls using a different bucket filled with clean water. This is important as not using a separate bucket only puts the dirt back to your walls.

Here are other essential tips that must be taken into consideration.

  • Painted walls are given a different treatment.

Washing interior walls have different care treatment depending on the kind of paint used on them. For latex-painted interior walls, put a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water. Alternatively, you can combine two to three teaspoons of distilled white vinegar in a gallon of water. Dip the sponge into the solution and squeeze it so it is just damp. Use it to clean off the dirt and grime off the wall.

Refrain from using harsh cleaners on latex-painted walls as these could incur damage on your walls.

  • Glass walls can be harder to maintain than you thought.

If you have glass wall panels in the office, cleaning may be more demanding for you. When you’re working on cleaning glass walls, make sure that you don’t leave streaks and other marks on the surface as a tiny smudge can easily affect the appearance of the glass and make it look dirty and unappealing.

You also have to pick the ideal cleaning cloth when dealing with glass walls. Microfiber cloths are most recommended for glass walls, as these are very absorbent and leaves no marks on the surface of the glass.

  • Consider spot cleaning.

Spot cleaning is a good idea whenever you see stubborn or accidental dirt on your office walls. This works as a quick solution to prevent the dirt from penetrating deeper into the office wall material. Furthermore, it keeps your wall’s fresh appearance. If you are pressed for time or your walls are not yet due for deep cleaning, spot cleaning can fill in the quick fix for dirt.

Walls in some office spaces are sensitive and require more intricate cleaning solutions. These include IT rooms and database server rooms. For areas that require data center cleaning, it would be best to let the experts handle the work as this involves a specialized cleaning treatment. Furthermore, the nature of the room, as well as other relevant conditions, must be considered. Cleaning it by yourself may not be a good idea if you are clueless about handling this kind of scenario. Better safe than sorry, folks!
